Someone may choose not to pull the target. You can decide to remove the target 0 feet. Suppose the attack hits. Then the creature will take 1d6 piercing damage. You may pull the animal “up to” 10 feet closer to you. The “up to” is quite essential. And it means you can pull the beast a maximum of 10 ft. However, it does not mention that it is an absolute value of ten ft.

Can Thorn/ Vine Whip 5e be used to hang an enemy in combat?

Its duration restricts it from doing so. The player character cast thorn whip 5e to grab an enemy by the neck. And they use gravity & a branch to hoist up the opponent. It is done all while holding on to the whip.

5e vine whip has an instantaneous duration. So, there is no “holding on” to the spell. Suppose the whip has pulled the creature once. The spell ends there. This particular spell does not last long enough to strangle a monster or to be used as a climbing rope. The rules are as the followings:

  • Characters cast 5e thorn whip, and they successfully attack the enemy, causing piercing damage.
  • So the enemy is pulled ten ft upwards. The game mechanics do not differentiate hoe to draw. It can be by the neck or arm or leg.

Finally Thorn whip 5e finishes. Enemy falls ten feet downward, and However, you have discretion as DM over how you want to make things work in your games. Hence, you can allow creative use of other features and spells. Flexibility is an asset for DMs. But too much flexibility with the rules can eventually lead to issues with game balance or players may disagree and get disappointed.

However, you may add a lot to the abilities of the 5e Thorn Whip spells. Now, it lasts longer than one turn and grapples the opponent. The opponent can’t break the grapple. However, it gets doomed with no way to save themselves. The DM usually rules the table as long as they can justify their rulings. There is undoubtedly a need to be consistent about these issues across all sessions. Therefore, creativity with solutions is healthy. It may create more problems if you are too lenient.
