Are they stuck within an unbreakable cage till they potentially die from fire damage?
Wall of Force 5e specifically says you cannot pass through the walls (so that’s apparent ), and Wall of Frost 5e gives the particular info about breaking through it. Wall of passion does not. It seems odd that a lesser level (level 4) spell is as good of a prison as a level 5. While also carrying damage, or a better prison than a level 6 spell while doing similar harm of another kind.
You can fly from the 5e Wall of fire. Or burrow under it and that many things are immune to fire or resistant. So the damage is not per se match dividing, but the prison aspect of it being entirely unbreakable by any leadership sounds broken.
Can you form Wall of fire in 5e?

You cast the spell for a ring together with the hurt side in. And everyone standing exactly where the wall kinds require 5d8 harm or half on a Dex rescue. Meanwhile, anyone surrounded by the ring needs no harm immediately. But will start carrying 5d8 damage (no save) at the end of the turn, every turn. It is until the spell ends or they depart through the Wall (taking yet another 5d8 fire damage, no rescue, for the effort).
Metamagic
Careful with Spell metamagic (which someone said in a comment) is not very helpful for a ringed wall of passion. All Careful Spell lets a sorcerer do is allow a selected monster automatically succeed on any saving throws the charm grants. It will not protect anyone surrounded by the ring, since they’re not receiving any saving throws. You can give a buddy who happens to be standing right where you want the Wall to form an automatic rescue (for half 5d8 damage) only as soon as the Wall comes to life, but that’s it.
Does the 5e Wall of Fire spell damage monsters on each side of the Wall?

A considerable portion of the problem here is the phrase”side of the wall” is not well-defined. It may refer to both an undefined area created by the Wall’s existence as well as the bodily surface of the Wall itself. Both readings cause difficulties for this particular spell, RAW.

That is how most men and women seem to want to read the charm (myself included). Unfortunately, a close reading reveals that studying it this way makes no sense with the way they chose to word it. The problem with reading the phrase as being indicative of the area created by the Wall’s presence. And not the physical surface of the Wall is that it makes the word “within 10 ft of that side” make no sense. Reading it this way, the spell does not even appear to work since there’s absolutely no way to adjudicate at which the effects are. Because it makes the bout not work in any way, this cannot be the correct reading.
Side of Wall = bodily surface studying
Using “side of this wall” to mean the physical surface of the Wall makes this apparent. But it then generates a problem. The place on the opposite half of this Wall is within range of 10 ft of the surface.
Nothing in the description says the other hand dealing no harm. To cancel out the clause in the first sentence which says that damage is completed”within 10 feet of the [damaging] side”. And 9 feet of non-wall space on the”non-damaging” aspect of this Wall is within that range.
That leaves a narrow 1-foot segment on the”non-damaging” side a monster wouldn’t take harm on.
RAW
While by a rigorous RAW reading, the previous ruling could be predicted right, I don’t think it would be smart to run it that way. At the minimum, I wouldn’t and have not run it that way, and I think doing so would be a wrong thought at most tables.
Primarily, by the RAW reading, the term saying the other side deals no harm has no use at all. It produces a small 1-foot gap of security, and that is it. That isn’t even enough for a monster to stand-in. That seems unlikely to have been the aim of this spell.
When players and DMs see they can make one facet of the spell”no damage” they rightly expect that that side of this Wall is safe for them to be on (e.g. “creatures on this side of the wall require no harm”).
I think this is a great, natural reading for the spell and that I feel that the RAW is straining quite a bit. Running it by RAW is a jarring diversion out of this reading, which could cause confusion and disagreements at the table.
The RAW also would increase the damage potential of the spell by a long time. Now the damaging area of the spell is virtually double. That will come with all the tradeoff of making it considerably more challenging for the players to use the Wall for security on one side of these in crowded areas (without taking hurt themselves). Additionally, it makes it increasingly difficult to prevent damaging allies.
As for me, I believe the RAW ought to be disregarded here in favour of this standard and natural reading of this charm, but your desk should do anything is the most fun for them.

A shimmering wall of bright light appears in a point you choose within range. It may be free-floating, or it can break on a solid surface. It emits bright sunlight outside to 120 feet and dim light for an additional 120 feet.

High levels in Wall of light 5e: It has defensive capabilities are pretty restricted; RAW, it might only block spells and spell effects, and even then based on your DM’s interpretation, just LOS spells & effects. Furthermore, if you can build wands, you can create a wand of force, so that others can do the same.
Other practical uses include developing an emergency clinic to the cleric to work on the injured. So they will be undisturbed, quitting an enemy too strong for your party from being able to strike. It is unless the enemy does not have to disintegrate. It creates a virtually non-penetrable fortress around an area. The purpose is to protect both against the material and ethereal plane.
To put it differently, it’s probably the most versatile defensive spell that a wizard may have.
