Monster has to be on this list. Its dark themes and incredible story will leave you craving more. Based on the mother of the same name by Naoki Urasawa, the anime tells the story of a Kenzo Tenma surgeon. Dr. Tenma enjoys health and prosperity in Germany, but he does not like politics at his hospital. So when two children arrive at the hospital in a critical condition, they do not obey the orders of their supervisors to care for a government official. This act of kindness eventually proves to be a serious mistake in revealing his life. Tenma takes a long journey to destroy this monster created by this good deed.

Monster is about human corruption. It is as dark as the reality of human nature. Still, as harmless and intimidating as a show, it is also a must-see. It has a great cast that is very memorable and a complex narrative with many layers.

Do you think human behavior and behavior can be measured? Do you think that a person’s inclination toward good and bad is calculated? If so, would it be fair and just? These are the questions waiting to be resolved in Psycho-Pass.

The series, written by author Gen Urobochi, is set for when a government office can calculate how a person will commit crimes. Psycho-Pass is used to judge people. If they appear to be a threat, they may be sent for forced renewal. If they are determined to be a major threat, they may be killed immediately. All of this can be done before a crime is committed.

Doesn’t that sound very good? However, when it comes to the anime that dictates personality, Psycho-Pass is one of the best. Contains interesting characters and dystopian nature reminiscent of Blade Runner.

Mirai Nikki (Future Diary)

  • Year: 2011
  • Number of Episodes: 26
  • Studio: Asread

With death rushing into every corner, Mirai Nikki (also known as the Future Diary) tells the death story of many tragic players imprisoned for playing a god-made survival game – the Future Diary Game.

Each player gets a different diary that they can use to predict the future. Their goal is to survive and become the next god of time and space. The story follows Yukiteru Amano as he tries to navigate the game. He discovers that his only partner, a girl named Yuno Gasai, might also be threatening.

This anime is full of blood, fun, mind games, action, and twists. It may not be because of a depressed heart, but those who like to be on the edge of their seats will enjoy the series.

Zankyou no Terror (Terror in Resonance)

  • Year: 2014
  • Number of Episodes: 11
  • Studio: MAPPA

Fear is what has been done in this show. Zankyou and Terror (also known as Terror in Resonance) are about two small terrorists who should not exist. Their names are 9 and 12, and they are all Sphinx. They have terrified Japan, and the police force cannot help itself in the face of adversity. The two young men are clever, but are they? Sure they do, but it is covered by a host of dark secrets that the world is not ready to discover.

Some call this series the art of its maturity and brilliance. Some call it reckless in all the unanswered questions and incomprehensible writing. I will leave that decision to you. At the very least, you can expect animation and good music. Shinichiro Watanabe directed the series, and the music was composed by Yoko Kanno.

Death Parade

  • Year: 2015
  • Number of Episodes: 13
  • Studio: Madhouse

What comes after death? That has been a question that has not been answered permanently. The series states that there are only two doors available after death. One is rebirth, and the other is avoided. Noise decreasing? There seems to be no freedom and liberty in the end.

In this anime, the recently deceased enters a mysterious bar where a bar vendor offers them a game to play. Success or failure will determine whether the person is reborn or cast in vain. Dear Parade talks about releasing the chains of life and being judged. Whatever you have done with your life will be your key to the door you will meet after death. Shinigami, or gods of death, will be your judge.

This anime deals with some dark topics. But it doesn’t tiptoe around them either. Instead, it faces them directly, much like how we all have to face the inevitable one day.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

  • Year: 2009
  • Number of Episodes: 64
  • Studio: Bones

Wondering why Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is on the list? Yeah, All that sounds pretty crap to me, Looks like B.T. ain’t for me either.

Edward and Alphonse are brothers who learned the art of alchemy at an early age. They used their knowledge to try to get their mother back. Unfortunately, this is an illegal practice; Edward loses an arm and a leg while Alphonse loses his entire body during the procedure. Then they set out on a journey to find a lovely philosophical stone to reclaim their bodies.

While this may appear dark, tense, or obscure in appearance, the story is dark enough to give a sense of humor. There is a vicious and cruel situation in this series. It has got strong praise, and the anime is certainly much deeper than it first appeared. Even alchemy when playing, conspiracy is worse than your usual action series.
