Or if you’re chasing something down a narrow hallway. Whenever I search for inspiration about how to use it, I only see things about sorcerer combos with ice magic.

How are the spells in Wall of Water 5e?

Is a monster in the area of a Wall of Water 5e spell trapped in ice when hit by the Ray of Frost cantrip?

In 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons, I am playing a Sorcerer where I have set myself the principle I cannot take fire spells. And instead, take poorer spells and attempt to take advantage of these with creativity. I’m wondering if the following trick works.

I use the Quickened Spell Metamagic alternative and throw Wall of Water to some creature’s space for a bonus action. Then within an act throw a Ray of Frost cantrip in the monster, will that freeze the water and trap the creature inside a block of ice?


A spell cast in Wall of water 5e with a bonus activity is incredibly swift. You have to use a bonus action on your turn to cast the spell, provided you have not already taken a bonus activity this turn. You can’t cast another spell during the same turn, except to get a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action.

In your example, you have utilized your Bonus Action via Metamagic to cast Wall of Water. There is no save for Wall. It merely creates battle management aspects within its region.

Should you cast it on a space containing a creature, that creature would be within the Wall (but Wallotice the Wall is on all’ thick).

Also note that just the 5′ section of this Wall they Wallin (see below) is switched into ice (and if ruined, doesn’t refill with water.)

You would finally have a Wall of Water with a frozen section containing a monster within their 5′ distance (but only 1′ thick of ice)

However, what can a frozen monster do in Wall of water 5e?

That is going to get table-dependent probably. There are no rules concerning being’in ice’ and what conditions that impose (like Restrained or Grappled.)

I would likely give a Dexterity rescue to avoid the ice (DC fixed by the caster, much like with Wall of Stone attempting to entrap someone. And then upon failure give them the Restrained condition.

Ray of Frost may not freeze the entire Wall, but Wall still freeze enough of it!

Given that Ray of Frost does not have an area of effect (Line, Cone, Sphere, etc.) but instead has one target it will not pass through a large field of the Wall of Water.

As you Want a clear path for spells to travel, the spell will travel through the Wall of waWalland freeze the minimal amount (at least a 5ft square section) nevertheless it would likely not freeze the Whole Wall (since the walls are up to 30 feet long by 10 feet high)

Freezing the 5ft by 5ft section containing the target would likely be sufficient to have your desired effect of at least partially trapping them!

I would say yes because the” physics” of the query makes logical sense. You are casting a freezing spell on a body of water that a thing is a position in it. I would say there are two ways to handle a controllable frozen thing. They die, or they need to produce a test to break loose. They’d die as a result of the water in their cells expanding and bursting the cell. It would be best if you were careful of the consequences of frostbite for more specific details. 

Creatures in Wall of water 5e

Creatures are swimming over the surface of frozen water traps in the ice. A trapped monster can use an action to create a Strength check from the spell save DC to break free.

Anyone can copy the DC for breaking free directly from the spell or adjust depending on the DMs view of the root thing. E.g., the Freezing Sphere spell completely envelops the target to trap the goal while we can view the variant as a homebrew version of it and might not do so. The scope upgrades for discussion and likely determine by complicated the situation which is clarified.

The sequence of activities needs assessment if there is some concealed wording/meaning that restricts it in some manner. I cannot satisfactorily answer this given my level of experience.

You would be better off with produce food and water, and or make or destroy water, for 30 gallons of water and 10 gallons respectively. You get the right quantity of water for some 3rd level and 1st level spell slots.

First, you’d only have the water for ten minutes. Then it might go away since it’s a concentration attraction for up to 10 min, and it states that if the spell finishes when the water evaporates. Secondly, It could be useful to protect yourself from the heat by using it as a 20 feet diameter curved wall to block flame spouts or stuff that may harm you. Third, you may be able to carry water in a semi-sphere with the Wall. Still, Wallpell does not say it is possible to move it, and you would only be able to take it for ten minutes without it falling.
