These methods–along with any others that provide you a formula for calculating your AC–are mutually exclusive; you may benefit from only one at a time. If you have access to more than one, you select which one to use. For instance, if you’re a sorcerer/monk, you can use either Unarmored Defense or Draconic Resilience, not both. Similarly, a druid/barbarian who transforms into a monster form with natural armor may use either the animal’s natural armor or Unarmored Defense.

What about Defense?

A shield increases your AC by two while you use it. By way of example, if you are unarmored and use a shield, your AC is 12 + your Dexterity modifier. Bear in mind that some AC calculations, such as a monk’s Unarmored Defense, prohibit defense use.

Once you have your base AC, it modifies by situational bonuses and penalties. For example, having half cover gives you a +2 bonus to your AC, and three-quarters cover provides a +5 bonus. Spells sometimes modify AC also. Shield of faith, by way of example, grants a goal a +2 bonus to AC until the spell ends.

Magic items can also improve your AC. Here are some examples: 

+1 chain mail provides you an AC of 17. A ring of protection gives you a +1 bonus to AC regardless of what you are sporting. Bracers of Defense give you a +2 bonus to AC if you are not wearing armor or using a shield.

Can Unarmored Defense work with a spell-like mage armor? Unarmored Defense doesn’t work with mage armor. Mage armor specifies that it functions on a creature who isn’t wearing armor.” The target of mage armor must indeed be unarmored. Still, mage armor gives you a new way to calculate your AC (13 + your Dexterity modifier). It is, therefore, incompatible with Unarmored Defense or another feature that offers an AC calculation.

How does barkskin work with shields, cover, and other modifiers to AC?

Barkskin specifies your AC can not be lower than 16 while you are affected by the spell. That means you effectively ignore any modifiers to your AC–including your Dexterity modifier, your armor, a shield, and cover–unless your AC is higher than 16. For example, if your AC usually is 14, it’s 16 while barkskin is on you. If your AC is 15 and you’ve got half cover, your AC is 17; barkskin is not relevant in this instance since your AC is now higher than 16.

Can you extend the term of the armour of Agathys by gaining more temporary hit points?

The spell works only so long as you have the spell grants’ temporary hit points. When those temporary hit points are gone, the spell ends.

Bear in mind that temporary hit points aren’t cumulative (see PH, 198). In case you’ve got temporary hit points and get more of them, you do not add them together unless a match feature says you can. You decide which temporary hit points to maintain. As an example, let’s say you’re a warlock with the Dark One’s Blessing feature, which gives you temporary hit points when you reduce a creature to 0 hit points.

You currently have two temporary hit points from the armor of Agathys. You just slew a monster, and your Dark One’s Blessing can now give you four temporary hit points. If you choose those temporary hit points, they replace those from the armor of Agathys and end which spell, so you might not need to take them and keep the spell going.

Do the temporary hit points from heroism accumulate each round? These temporary hit points are not cumulative. The spell would let you know when you can not add them together. At the beginning of each of your turns, the spell virtually refreshes the number of temporary hit points you have from it. If you lost some or all the temporary hit points, the spell gives them back to you.

Can mage armor 5e operate with a shield?

Yes, Mage Armor and a shielded stack. Mage Armor functions as a suit of armor, so it does not work with body armor. A shield is not body armor. So use it simultaneously as Mage Armour, and it does not cause Mage Armour to go away.

Can you cast 5e mage armor as a ritual?

Mage armor (and other similarly minded combat abilities) very intentionally cannot cast rituals for fairly obvious power reasons. Pretty certain rituals still have their costs. It only saves a spell slot.

Can a monk use Mage Armor?

Mage armor is a magic force with no weight to it. It is not real armor. Unarmored Defense for a monk means moving freely, so mage armor does not interfere with Unarmored Defense.

Can Mage Armor stack with draconic resilience?

Mage armor 5e also sets a way to determine your AC. You can choose between them, but there’s no way to combine them. In terms of boosting your AC, the two attributes (Draconic Resilience and Mage Armor) will not pile. So really, the only point of a draconic sorcerer learning Mage Armor would be buffing other men and women.

Does Mage Armor 5e stack with barbarian?

It does not stack with the Barbarian’s Unarmored Defense ability. Both of them provide an armor calculation, and then you get to select which armor calculation you wish to use.
