A typical eMTB ride will last about 30 km, so a mini battery will suffice for most rides. Purchasing a modular battery system is only necessary for very long rides and multi-day adventures.

For climbing, an HPR 120S motor is the best choice. It has higher torque and a more extended range than the TQ, but it will cost you more than three hundred dollars. However, if you are interested in maximum power and climbing speed, you might want to consider a TQ motor, which weighs just over three kilograms. The HPR 120S motor is a little heavier than the others and requires a bigger battery. But it’s also better if you are looking for maximum range on varied terrain.

eMTB motors also come in smaller sizes. A smaller motor can match a battery of the same capacity. For instance, the FAZUA motor has the lowest battery capacity in our test field, 252 Wh. A system from Shimano or Specialized will require a 320 Wh battery. But these batteries are still far more expensive than a standard eMTB battery.

The two largest eMTB motor suppliers are Bosch and Shimano. Those two manufacturers are competing for the best eMTB motors. Bosch is one of the leading space companies and has invested significantly in the best eMTB motors. Their Line CX mid-drive motor is a potent mid-drive motor with a peak torque of 85Nm.

eMTB-specific batteries offer 720Wh

Many bike brands have tried their hand at creating eMTB-specific batteries. The newest category is the Light eMTB. Light eMTBs will rely on batteries half the size of all-around eMTBs. In addition, since light eMTBs will use less electricity to power the bike, smaller batteries allow bike manufacturers to create new frame designs. These bikes are the future of e-bikes.

Both Canyon USA and BMC have eMTB-specific batteries available. The Canyon Spectral.ON will come with a 720Wh battery. This battery will give you 15 to 20 percent more range—than the Spectral.ON will also boost mileage by 15 to 20 percent. In addition, it has a 30-degree tilt so that you can position your bike more naturally in your favorite riding position.

eMTBs with large batteries fall behind

A large battery will increase range and speed, but what about those who prefer the slower pace of long, easy climbs? If you’re the latter type, an eMTB’s high battery capacity is a huge plus. However, if you’re more interested in quality over quantity, an eMTB with a smaller battery is more practical. Here are a few factors to consider when deciding on an eMTB’s battery capacity.

The biggest drawback is the battery’s size, making the bike difficult to ride for longer than an hour.
