Despite being a Large wretched CR 30 horror, the dreaded Tarrasque in 5e will be murdered by a Clay Golem 5e of measly CR 9. It could take some time, but finally, the Golem would triumph. It appears odd, but let us have a peek, shall we?

Tarrasque 5e dnd Monster stats vs. Clay Golem 3.5

The most significant thing to consider is the damage resistances and immunities of each creature. The Tarrasque is resistant to fire, whereas the Golem is resistant to psychic and acid damage. On the other hand, the essential factors are the immunity to nonmagical weapons and Golem’s resistance to acid.

The definition of a weapon is the crux of this debate. The interpretation of “weapon” could mean either solely artificial weapons, such as longswords or maces, or any weapon, both natural and artificial. On the other hand, the beginning of the book notes (page 10-11) that “the’weapon’ could be a natural weapon. It is like a tail or claw spike” and ergo the second interpretation is the right one.

Magic Weapons

“However, where is this leading?” You may be wondering. Looking at the Clay Golem is a great line that’s the final nail in the Tarrasque’s coffin. Only above its “Actions” section is says the Golem gets the “Magic Weapons” attribute. As might be intuited from its title, it means that its weapon attacks are magic (and therefore may hit the Tarrasque in 5e). On the flip side, the Tarrasque, the most powerful and dreaded monster in the Manual, lacks this feature. Its weapons are organic, not adamantine, so it has no way to inflict harm on the Golem using its attacks.

Tarrasque 5e vs Clay Golem

Picture the scene: the Tarrasque 5e awakens from its slumber, ready to raze whole civilizations. As it looks to the cave’s departure, it seems that a large humanoid figure made of clay slowly. It rears up and roars its defiance before unleashing its full fury on the intruder. Only to understand that its attacks do not even make a dent. The intruder then punches it in the nose. Twice. Nothing succeeds in its stomach.

Clay Golem 3.5

Thus, let us assume the Tarrasque takes its flip first. It uses its Frightful Presence (which the Golem is immune to) and requires five strikes: one with its sting, which causes the Golem to be restrained, two using its claws, one with its horns, and one with its tail. Due to its +19 to hit, we can safely assume that the Tarrasque hits with every attack. Let’s be nice and say the Tarrasque deals maximum damage and critically hits with every hit. That deals a total of 402 damage: enough to instantly kill pretty much anything in the game. The Golem, because of its immunity, reduces this hit to zero.

Clay Golem attacks

On its turn, the golem attacks (factoring in drawback, two attacks per round, and the opportunity to hit seriously, the Golem does a mean of 1.3335 damage per turn while restrained) Tarrasque utilizes its legendary activity to swallow the Golem. While inside the Tarrasque, the Golem is blinded, restrained, and takes 56 (16d6) acid damage at the beginning of each of the Tarrasque’s turns.

Because clay golems are immune to acidity (and in reality cure when acidity damage is dealt with), this is simply a benefit to the Golem. While it’s inside, it can not be harmed by anything outdoors, and it moves with the Tarrasque. Therefore it can’t run away with its superior speed. Dealing a mean of 1.3335 damage per turn, it will choose the Golem 507 works of harm to reduce the Tarrasque to 2 hit points–this works out to being 3042 minutes, or just over 50 minutes.

And so there we have it: the large nasty Tarrasque brought low by a measly Clay Golem. Sure, it might take some time, and a town or two may be ruined in the meantime, but it seems silly that such a powerful creature would have a weakness which might be so easily exploited.
