The protagonist is a courier working for the Mojave Express, a postal service that operates in New Vegas and the surrounding Mojave Desert. The game starts when the Courier is attacked by a mobster named Benny while en route to New Vegas to drop a mysterious item known as the “Platinum Chip”. Benny fires at the Courier in the head leaving him to die and taking the Chip, but the Courier is saved by a Securitron named Victor and brought back to good health by Doc Mitchell in Goodsprings. The Courier undertakes a journey across the Mojave Wasteland to track down Benny and get the Platinum Chip.
Hence the game develops according to the Courier’s decisions and unlocks many different events, groups and characters. The primary storyline comes after the Courier’s quest to find Benny and retrieve the Platinum Chip. Along the way, the Courier confronts many groups of people with different issues that he can choose to assist, ignore, or otherwise sabotage, resulting in positive or negative karma. Ultimately, after finding Benny and the Chip, the Courier they find themselves in the middle of a war between three major groups: Caesar’s Legion, a group of Romanesque slavers, the New California Republic (NCR), an expansionist democratic federation, and Mr House, the enigmatic de facto ruler of New Vegas, in command of an army of Securitron robots that patrol the city.
Each of the three sides strives to control the Hoover Dam, which is still functional and provides the Southwest with power and clean, non-irradiated water; thus, custody of the dam implies significant control of the region. It is disclosed that Mr House, a human from before the Great War and surviving via a contained life support chamber, authorized the Platinum Chip’s delivery the day of the war. The Chip is a data storage device with a project that can elevate the Securitrons to a tremendous level of combat effectiveness but was stolen by Benny as part of a strategy to take over House’s security and declare New Vegas for himself with the assistance of a reprogrammed Securitron named Yes Man.
